Polarisation in CSS/GPS radio sources

چکیده

The polarisation properties of the intrinsically small (< 20 kpc) radio sources are briefly discussed. At centimetric and decimetric wavelengths, substantial polarised emission is often detected in quasars and, at a lower level, in radio sources identified with galaxies with projected linear sizes in excess of a few kpc. The projected linear size at which some polarised emission is detected decreases with observing frequency. High Rotation Measures are commonly found in these sources, implying high electron/ion densities and/or strong interstellar magnetic fields. For the objects found unpolarized at resolutions of the order of a few pc, either the source magnetic field is highly disordered or the scale of ambient magnetic field cells is not resolved.

Symmetry Parameters of CSS Sources: Evidence of Fuelling?

The compact steep spectrum (CSS) and gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) sources are widely believed to be young radio sources, with ages 106 yr. If the activity in the nucleus is fuelled by the supply of gas, one might find evidence of this gas by studying the structural and polarisation characteristics of CSS sources and their evolution through this gas. In this paper we discuss some of the possi...

Probing radio source environments via Hi and OH absorption

We present the results of Hi and OH absorption measurements towards a sample of radio sources using the Arecibo 305-m telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). In total, 27 radio sources were searched for associated 21-cm Hi absorption. One totally new Hi absorption system was detected against the radio galaxy 3C258, while five previously known Hi absorption systems, and one gal...

An unbiased sample of bright southern Compact Steep Spectrum and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum Sources

Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are classes of compact, powerful, extragalactic objects. These sources are thought to be the earliest stages in the evolution of radio galaxies, capturing the ignition (or, in some cases, re-ignition) of the AGN. As well as serving as probes of the early stages of large-scale radio sources, these sources are good, stable, ...

New candidate GHz Peaked Spectrum and Compact Steep Spectrum Sources

Data from a recent Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) program of multi-frequency, multi-epoch monitoring of 202 active galactic nuclei with declinations < +10 • have been searched for GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources. Supplementary data at higher and lower frequencies, where available, have been used to further examine the spectral properties of pre...

Small-scale structures in Compact Steep-Spectrum and GHz-Peaked-Spectrum radio sources

We determine the small-scale structure for a large sample of Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources and a sample of larger radio sources at 327 MHz using the technique of Inter-Planetary Scintillation (IPS) with the Ooty Radio Telescope. Our observations provide structural information on angular scales ranging from about 50 to a few hundred milliarcsec. We esti...
